What Should I Eat Before, During and After Workouts?
Carbohydrates, protein, and fats: A macronutrient-based guide to working out. What to eat, and when, to get the most out of your body.
Staying hydrated is one of the most fundamental aspects of maintaining good health. Despite its simplicity, many people overlook the importance of drinking enough water daily, which can lead to various health problems. Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining bodily functions, boosting physical and mental performance, and promoting overall well-being.
Water makes up about 60% of the human body, underscoring its vital role in maintaining life. Every cell, tissue, and organ in the body needs water to function correctly. Here are several critical functions that depend on proper hydration:
WHY HYDRATION MATTERS:
Proper hydration is essential for physical health, mental clarity, and overall well-being. By making hydration a priority, you can boost your energy, improve your mood, and help your body function at its best.
Dehydration occurs when your body loses more water than it takes in. Thirst is often the first indicator, but by the time you feel thirsty, your body may already be slightly dehydrated. Other signs include:
SEVERE DEHYDRATION:
Severe dehydration can lead to serious complications, including heat injuries, kidney failure, and even seizures.
The amount of water each person needs differs depending on various factors such as age, gender, activity level, and climate. A general guideline is to drink 64 ounces of water a day (about 8 glasses). A good indicator of adequate hydration is the color of your urine – it should be pale yellow.
If you exercise regularly, live in a hot climate, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, your water needs will increase. You also get water from food, especially fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges, which have a high water content.
While staying hydrated is essential, it is also possible to drink too much water, leading to a condition called hyponatremia. This occurs when excess water dilutes the sodium in your blood, which can cause symptoms like headaches, confusion, nausea, and in severe cases, even seizures. It’s important to balance hydration with your body’s needs, especially during intense physical activity.
HYPONATREMIA:
Hyponatremia occurs when the concentration of sodium in your blood is abnormally low. Sodium is an electrolyte, and it helps regulate the amount of water that's in and around your cells.
Proper hydration is essential for physical health, mental clarity, and overall well-being. By making hydration a priority, you can boost your energy, improve your mood, and help your body function at its best. Water is truly the foundation of life and your friend. Keeping your body well-hydrated is a simple yet powerful step towards better health. So raise a glass to water, and keep your body and mind refreshed.
